OLs of previous generations will remember the Lenten Appeal, when pupil led entertainment of all kinds, including sponsored races, plays and concerts and even fudge making, were incorporated into fund raising activity for the Schools chosen charity. Charity fundraising continues today in the form of Lenten Giving. Every year each House chooses a charity to support, which might be a children’s hospice, helping women in Afghanistan, the local foodbank or cancer research. It’s the pupil’s choice, and their chance to think about what is meaningful to them personally.
The aim is to get the whole House involved, with everyone getting creative for their favourite cause, thinking up fundraising ideas and, raising as much money as possible for each charity. We have hot chocolate sales, Valentine’s Day roses and chocolates, roving sweet sellers doing the rounds, and even a Bingo night.
Every year, Leys pupils come together to give time, money, effort and gifts, which everyone loves doing and, we hope, helps others too.
Granta House
The Granta House charity is Mercy Ships UK, a faith-based international development organisation that deploys hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, delivering vital, free healthcare to people in desperate need.
Fundraising activity so far has included Valentines Roses and Dodgeball.

This year North A pupils are raising money for Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide which is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people.
Its goal is to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress.
As a House we will be raising money using a variety of ways including a sports kit auction and running a whole school football tournament.

School House
This year in School House we are raising money for Annabelle’s Challenge the charity that supports sufferers and the families of sufferers with vascular EDS – a condition a School House pupil, Carl George, died from in 2017. This was a massive focus for us pre-Covid, but Covid slowed us down. Nevertheless by the start of this year the House has raised over £16,000 in five years from various events.
The Lower 6th have taken up the challenge and are all going to run a half-marathon, the Boundary Run, at the start of March. The team will be all of the School House Lower 6th, the Head of House, myself and Assistant Housmaster Mr Olly Layton. The boys have set the target of raising £4,000 so that the House tops the £20,000 total this year . This will be a great opportunity to cap off my time as Housemaster in a very meaningful way. With little fuss they have already raised over £2,000.
It is great to see a whole range of boys, brought together in a boarding house, coming together and doing something pretty challenging in memory of a boy they personally never knew in order to help others.
